In bright clear crystal water,
She darts in Life's delight,
A petulant Forella
A flash of rainbow light.
I sit still on the creekside
And watch in ecstasy;
The lively young thing bathing
in sweet clear water free.
Then Fishin' Rod- an angler
Shows up upon the shore;
His cold eye spies Forella,
She hides- she know what for!
She's clever in clear water,
As long as she can see,
He'll never catch Forella
In sweet clear water free.
The thief- he grows impatient;
He'll wait no more!
He muddies up the water then,
As I watch, he twitched his rod-
Forella, blinded, floundered;
On his cruel line is hauled out of Life's stream.
I watch in silent horror
My bleeding one betrayed.
I watch in silent mourning
My bleeding one betrayed.

A stranger when I came here;
Still stranger, I depart.
May graced me her kind flowers,
Sweet blossoms of her art.
The girl, she talked of True Love,
(Her mother hinted so)
The girl, she talked of True Love,
(Her mother hinted so)…
The cold dark world is shrouded now,
The road lies deep in snow!
I know no destination;
I suddenly took flight.
I choose my own direction
(Blind now, in dark of night!)
My Shadow in the moonlight,
Stay with me where I go;
My shadow in the moonlight,
Stay with me where I go;
I’ll search the whited meadows
For fresh tracks in the snow!
Why should I stay here longer?
They’ll only throw me out!
Let mad dogs stay a howlin’
The master’s home about!
Love loves to go a-wandering’
So God has made her light;
Love loves to go a-wandering’
So God has made her light
From one love to another-
Fine Lady Love, good night!
I’ll not disturb your dreaming
Nor shame your sweet amour,
You will not hear my footsteps;
Soft, soft! I close your door.
I stop as I am leaving;
Here on your gate I write;
I stop as I am leaving;
Here on your gate I write
My words; you’ll read by morning light
My Lady Love, “Good night.”

Raven follows me from town
Circling', circling' round and round;
Like he's tethered to my hat-
Crying crying crying...
"Raven, wonderliscious clown
Will you never leave me?
You think, with your unrelenting care,
My sweet flesh you'll garner?"
Oh, its not so long a walk
With my trusty wanderin' stick..
"Raven, leave me now to find
True love in the grave!".

Out behind the village stands the lyre man;
Cold, bent, rigid fingers- he does what he can;
Barefoot on the ice he falters to and fro;
See, his empty tip-jar sits- an empty hole;
No one wants to hear him; they all look away.
Dogs: they circle round and growl at the old man.
"That's just how it goes," he gives his life away;
Turns away, plays on; his harp is never still;
Turns away, plays on; his harp is never still.
"Beautiful Old Bastard, shall I stay with you?
"Will you turn you and and will you join my song?
Will you turn you and and will you join my song?"
